VARIABILITY IN POLLUTED WHITE DWARF SYSTEMS

Planetary systems can survive the violent stellar evolutionary process to the white dwarf phase. At least 30% of single white dwarfs are observed with planetary material polluting its atmosphere. The short gravitational settling times means an external reservoir of polluting material is required. A fraction of these 'polluted white dwarfs' have infrared signatures consistent with dust discs. I use near and mid infrared photometric observations of the dust around the white dwarfs to search for infrared variability consistent with changes in the discs. I also use spectroscopy to both search for variability in the metal spectral features in the white dwarf atmospheres, and to study the composition of the polluting material. These approaches help us to understand the stages leading up to the planetesimals being engulfed by their host star and the end stages of a planetary system.
