Quick Guide to the Library of the Institute of Astronomy

Where. The Main Library is in the old Observatory building: textbooks, periodicals, Library Office, slides and films etc. The Mobile Stacks are in the Michael Penston Room, and contain observatory publications and non-current journals. There is a small working collection of mostly duplicate books and periodicals in the Hoyle Building.

Who may borrow. All members of the Institute of Astronomy, M.A. and registered Research Students of the University. First-time users must sign the Visitors Book kept in Periodicals Room C, and should introduce themselves to the librarian. Undergraduates and others should ask the Librarian before borrowing.

How to borrow. Fill in a loan card. There are loan card trays in Main Library Reading Rooms A & B; Periodicals Room C; outside the Library Office; in the Annex and in the Michael Penston Room. Full name please (not just initials) and Department.

How to return. Put the book in the Return Tray (Main Library Periodicals Room C). Don't put it on the shelf and don't alter or remove the loan card. Please return books to the Library from which they came.

Loan Period. Please return books as soon as you can, but the maximum period for borrowing is three months. If you wish to renew a book you have on loan you must bring it back to the Library in order to renew it.

The book isn't on the shelf. Consult the filing drawers marked "Loans" near the Returned Book trays. Loans are arranged in two sequences, author/ editor and periodical title. If the previous borrower agrees to transfer the book to you, fill in a new loan card and put it in the tray. DO NOT ALTER the old card or remove it from the drawer.

Not to be taken out. A very few things, all clearly marked. Notably: (1) Periodicals on display in Room C (2) new books on display in the Hoyle Building (3) Books marked with a yellow spot or on yellow-marked shelves.
