Dewhirst Classification available online (July 2007)
The numbers used to classify books in the IoA Library and arrange them on the shelf are part of a system invented by former IoA librarian Dr David W. Dewhirst in 1966. The system provides a simple numbering system for subjects within astronomy, for example telescopes is 16, relativity is 45, Mars is 95, cosmology is 136 etc. In order to help users of the library, we have mounted the scheme on our website, making an electronic copy available to all users for the first time.
